Dutch construction culture

The Netherlands has a rich building history, strongly influenced by landscape and water. The Netherlands is a flat country where efficient and sustainable constructions can be realised almost everywhere. The country is known for its locks, water management, tunnels and austere and compact infrastructure. Nowadays, energy transition is playing a major role and is being fully addressed. You can recognise this in the ports and around the big cities. The Dutch are proud of what they build and love to share it with you! To make the work run as smoothly and safely as possible, skilled workers communicate freely with each other. Unlike in many other countries, hierarchy is much less observed on the Dutch construction sites. Colleagues look out for themselves and for each other. With short lines of communication and room for a sense of humour.

Dutch culture

You may have already noticed. The Dutch are direct and down-to-earth in their communication. To avoid misunderstandings, they try to be as honest and clear as possible. The Dutch use as few words as possible to say what they think. Cycling is part of everyday life in the Netherlands. Because of the flat landscape, you can cycle almost anywhere and the infrastructure is completely adapted to these road users. Cyclists and pedestrians therefore have the right of way in many places, which may take some getting used to.
Dutch culture values creativity and innovation. People will always encourage you to come up with a creative solution. The Netherlands is a trading country and has been a country with a lot of labour migration for hundreds of years. Almost everyone is used to working with different cultures and nationalities. We embrace foreign skilled workers. You probably won't be surprised then that there are various activities to enjoy related to your own culture. Especially around the larger cities.

Safety culture

Construction sites in the Netherlands have strict safety requirements. These are in place for all within the construction chain to try and minimise the number of accidents. The Netherlands is one of the safest places to work in construction. Construction sites are clean, orderly and safe. Decent machinery and tools are used. Everyone looks out for each other and when an unsafe situation arises, a solution is sought immediately. This is how we work together to create a safe working environment. Do not feel it as an attack when someone points out an unsafe action to you. They do so to make sure you get back home safely. In the Netherlands, we either work safely or we do not work at all.

Projects we and our skilled workers are proud of

PROJECT

Rottemerentunnel (A16)

In the past few years, a lot of hard work has gone into creating an 11-kilometre stretch, setting the bar high for sustainability. To improve the quality of life and accessibility of the Rotterdam region, Rijkswaterstaat has built a new motorway along the northern parts of Rotterdam.

PROJECT

Railway station Ede-Wageningen

To serve the increasing number of passengers at the station, the municipality of Ede and NS-Stations commissioned Prorail to revamp the Ede-Wageningen section.

PROJECT

Dike reinforcement Doetinchem

Dikes are incredibly important to the Netherlands. Without them, the Netherlands would look very different. That is why it is very important to maintain these dikes.

PROJECT

Wooneilanden IJburg
