Rottemerentunnel (A16)

The world's first energy-neutral tunnel in the world

Project description

Rottemerentunnel A16

In the past few years, a lot of hard work has gone into creating an 11-kilometre stretch, setting the bar high for sustainability. To improve the quality of life and accessibility of the Rotterdam region, Rijkswaterstaat has built a new motorway along the northern parts of Rotterdam. The structure blends seamlessly into its surroundings and is also energy neutral.
The 2200-metre tunnel features smart solutions for the required electricity, heating and lighting. The applied lighting ensures optimum safety, but natural light is also installed. Excessive noise levels have been minimised by the use of extra noise-reducing asphalt (two-layer PA fine). Several noise barriers and embankments isolate the tunnel and the access routes from the surrounding area. This gives nature space and creates new area connected by cycling and walking paths. Rotterdam has gained a nice piece of innovation.

Our input?

In cooperation with Combinatie De Groene Boog, our team of professional concrete carpenters and foremen safely realised the concrete work.

Work took place along the entire stretch, always considering the impact on the surrounding area. In spite of the challenges of carrying out work on a tunnel that cuts through a nature conservation area, our professionals always managed to make the most of it.

De Groene Boog is a consortium of Dura Vermeer, Besix, Van Oord and Mobilis TBI.
Project status
Realised
Number of Aelbers man-hours
25.000 hrs
Number of Aelbers professionals
